OVERNIGHT

Backpacking food basics

Balance ready-to-eat snacks with meals that match your water, stove and storage plan.

Separate snacks from meals

No-cook snacks are useful while walking and as a backup. Rehydrating meals can provide a different dinner format, but they depend on water, time and sometimes a stove. Read the directions before you shop so your food works with the equipment you intend to carry.

Freeze-dried is not the only method

Mountain House and Peak Refuel describe their meal ranges as freeze-dried. Good To-Go explicitly uses dehydration instead. Both can be sold in lightweight pouches, so appearance alone does not identify the preservation method. Our meal category includes both, with the method labeled on each listing.

Check the trip logistics

Plan safe drinking and preparation water. Follow campsite food-storage rules and the package instructions for leftovers. A pouch marked as multiple servings should not automatically be treated as one person’s complete meal; your requirements depend on your own needs.
